Sazani Island-Karaburuni Peninsula is the first Marine Protected Area in Albania. It was established by the Council of Ministers of Albania on 28 April 2010. The MPA is 0.126 km^2. The area contains important species, habitats and associations. Globally threatened species including the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta, the common dolphin Delphinus delphis, the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus and the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus have been recorded in the Sazani-Karaburuni area.
