The Wildlife Conservation Society has pushed for the strengthening of Kenya’s network of marine protected areas. There are currently six national marine parks and reserves that protect fringing coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds. These ecosystems face threats from unsustainable fishing and the impacts of climate change, particularly prolonged high sea surface temperatures which cause coral bleaching.
