Site Description
The Dwesa-Cwebe MPA which is adjacent to the Dwesa-Cwebe Nature Reserve is located in the beautiful and rugged Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The MPA is 14 km long and extends 6 km out to sea from the high water mark. It extends from the western bank of the mouth of the Suku River to Human’s Rock just north of the Ngabara point. The MPA also includes the tidal portion of the Mbashe River. The MPA was initially declared as a marine reserve in 1989 under the then Transkei Government. It was later reconfirmed as a stricltly no-take zone in terms of the Marine Living Resources Act. (WWF website).
In November 2014, the previous MPA was withdrawn and repealed to be replaced with a multi-use MPA with restricted zones. The newly declared MPA was put out for comment here until December 4th, 2014. The new MPA created three coastal "Controlled Zone" for recreational shore-based fishing.
