Vlaamse Banken was proposed as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) on June 2010 and was then confirmed as a SCI on Septemeber 2011. It is under the Habitats Directive and is located in the Atlantic biogeographical region. It protects 15 species of the Nature Directives and protects 2 habitat types of the Habitats Directive.
